Remember me? Didn’t I tell you I’d be back? 🕺🏾

2021 has been a big year for me. From graduating college, to moving into my own apartment, to getting my first full-time job. (And that’s just in the last seven months). Sometimes, it feels like I’m the main character of my own TV show.

We all know how it feels when you’re watching your favorite show and the last episode ends right before a big piece of the plot is revealed. Then you’re left waiting for the next season to pick up where the story left off.

That’s how I feel going into the New Year.

This year has been a whirlwind in terms of accomplishments, milestones, and overall growth. Looking back on everything, I couldn’t be more excited to keep moving forward.

So, before the holidays, I’ll be taking some time to think about some of those things, and how I’m hoping they’ll help me in the future. 🤞🏾

  1. Sometimes, Just Say Yes

In September, I drove an ice cream truck. I still can’t believe it, and I can honestly say, I would have NEVER imagined myself doing so. However, if I would’ve turned that down, I wouldn’t have made my way onto the team at Oyster in a full-time role. So, that worked out. I’ll be jumping on opportunities as they come my way in 2022. Who knows what might come out of it, maybe I’ll win an award or something. 🤷🏾‍♂️

2. Try to Stop Worrying About Being Wrong

Rocky Balboa once said, “Life isn’t about how hard you can hit, but how hard you can get hit and still keep moving forward.”

A colleague recently told me, “Dude, I f#$% up like everyday, it’s fine.”

Put those two together and I think that’s contender for advice of the decade.

Honestly, I’m still coming to terms with this one. It’s okay to be wrong sometimes. I’ll be shifting some of my energy to recognizing that the world (most likely) isn’t going to end based on me making one or two mistakes. Take a deep breath, make a note of where you went wrong, and move forward. Hopefully, you learn something along the way.

3. Control What You Can Control, and Don’t Sweat What You Can’t

I’ve been getting more and more comfortable with the idea of letting go of what I can’t control. Obviously we can’t control everything around us. But we can focus our energy on what’s in our control and let the rest sort itself out. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Overall, going into 2022, I’ll be building on the progress I made this year, both professionally and personally. Maybe it’ll be another season of the show 2021 played out to be. And if that’s the case then who knows, maybe this next season will be even better than the last. 😏
